I have a 1978 140 hp Johnson Outboard that lost spark. I replaced the power pack and that did no good. I replaced the stator and the thing ran like champ! For one day. Then the stator melted again. I figured that the problem was the rectifier and after doing some resistance test it appeared to be bad. I put on a new stator and rectifier and just knew that I was good to go. So far I have ran the battery dead twice trying to crank her and all I get are a few single sparks every once in a while. I think 4 total. Can some one please help me before I turn this thing into an artifial reef? Thanks

Re: No Spark

I GUESS THIS IS ONE YOU SHOULD HAVE TAKEN IN TO A TECHNICIAN BEFORE BUYING SO MANY PARTS. IF YOU HAVE REPLACED THE PARTS YOU MENTIONED YOU HAVE ALREADY SPENT A SMALL FORTUNE.YOU NEED TO FIND THE PROBLEM BEFORE BUYING ANY MORE PARTS.CHECK ALL OF YOUR WIRING AND BE SURE NONE OF IT IS CORRODED OR SHORTED TOGETHER ANY WHERE . CHECK ALL GROUNDS AND BE SURE THEY ARE ALL CLEAN AND MAKING GOOD CONTACT. DID YOU HOOK UP THE BATTERY CORRECTLY ? DID YOU HAVE THE RIGHT PARTS FOR YOUR YEAR MODEL OF MOTOR ? WHEN YOU DO REPLACE ANY MORE PARTS BE SURE YOU HAVE ALL OF THE WIRES PLUGGED UP CORRECTLY AND TO MATCHING COLORS.IF YOU AR EUNSURE OF THE PROBLEM AT THIS POINT I BELIEVE I WOULD TAKE IT IN TO THE SHOP THOUGH BEFORE I SPENT ANY MORE MONEY . GOOD LUCK

Re: No Spark

What CaptBlack said..
Also, sounds like it is now a timing problem.
Check the flywheel key. They tend to shear or bend after hitting something,or stalling shortly after you've had it off (the flywheel has a minute amount of play in it afterwards).
And once you get it running, check the flywheel nut torque after 10minutes operation.
Sure, it could be the new switchbox, but I have my fingerz crossed!

Chris Keel

There is only one way to check a powerpack. Give it what it needs, and if it don't perform......pitch it.
what it needs:

>check all connectors, supportive wiring and grounds
>check kill circuit
>check coils
>check charge voltage
>check trigger voltage

If the above are good, the pack is bad......
Anything short of these tests is just guessing....

I would check the timmer (trigger coil under flywheel). It should produce about .5V while cranking. Also check the charge coil voltage as well. Here is the troubleshooting webpage that will guide you through....you will need a DVA adapter or a peak reading meter. Borrow, build or buy one. If you want to build one, I can help...

click me
