no spark

'86 Johnson VRO90. About 2 1/2 yrs ago I started having problems with intermitant spark
Once the boat started it would run for hours. I should also mention that this engine is on
a '40 houseboat moored on a bouy. I thought that the prob was with the lanyard swith at
the control, so I bypassed it. Still the same problem. A marina mechanic came out and
looked at the motor. No spark to either bank. He checked the 20 amp (?) fuse and it was
good. He condemmed the stator (timing base). I replaced it but was kind of leery when the
guy who sold it to me said he had never sold one before. Still the same problem. Sometimes
spark and sometimes not. His next idea was that the Amphenol plug between my control and
engine was corroded. My cabling is in conduit, so its not that easy to check. He lent me
a "known good" cotroller and I plugged my engine directly into it and still no spark on either
bank, I took the chance that both power paks had gone out at the same time and replaced
the starboard pak. Still no spark. I've changed to timong base back and forth between the
old and new at least 3X. Ive metered every wire at the control and they all seem to have
on them what they are supposed to have. Ive replaced the flywheel woodruff key and
have resisted the temptation to cut the black with yellow tracer (lanyard ground) off the
power paks. I need help on determining what the Ohm value should be on the stator, power
paks, etc. The 20 amp fuse I've metered 5X and it keeps looking good . I'm no pro, but
a fair "shadetree" and this (my first and only outboard after 40 years of boating) is close to
beating me. I can't exactly haul this boat down to my nearest shop. Also, I don't have
a shop manual and neither does my three closest shops.

Re: no spark

jrihyper,

sounds like the timing is off if not it could be your electrical grounding or if you take the flywheel off, there should be a key on the crankshaft that turns the flywheel and gives you the spark this key could have sheared due to hitting an object under the water

Re: no spark

mate #1

thanks for the reply. i've changed the woodruff key already. not because it was "rolled", but because i had buggered it up a little as many times as i'd had the flywheel of. should i still not get spark even in the wrong place with the engine out of time? also, i have a couple of timing lights that are marine compatible and i dont even know which hole is #1!

hyper
