I just rebuilt the carbs and put it all back together along with a new starter.
Am at 1 1/2 turns out on low speed needles, have tried different settings.
Starter turns great, nice blue spark off boots to plugs.
New plugs and tried cleaning and regapping older three sets.
New gas twice at 50-1 ratio.
Hoses are fine or new.

It will crank like mad, have tried all settings of choke and spraying gas mix in plug holes and throttle.
Start/run controls are operating correctly
I get blue smoke for a little bit then no smoke after 10 secs in the dunk tank, never starts.

Boat was running OK at idle, badly at WOT 6 weeks ago so I decided on carb kit.

Have never popped the flywheel off to check points.

I believe I have fuel pump routed correctly, input is easy but I'm not positive about other 2 hoses.

I'm pulling out what little hair is left.

Successful answerers will be remembered in my will!

Thanks,
Jim C

Re: No start 71 Johnson 50hp

If your motor is a '71 model, you don't have points. That motor has a stator, timer base, powerpack and ignition coils. If you are getting "spark" to both high tension leads, chances are that all of these components are working. The first thing that I would look at, is the connection to the timer base - does it position with movement of the throttle and is it in the proper position, when the throttle is in the idle position. I would also be sure to use choke when starting, even if it is warm out. My '72 Johnson 65hp, which is essentially the same engine as yours (except with three cylinders), wouldn't start without choke, but would fire immediately when choke was applied.
