Got 89 vip with 2.3. I pumped out the old oil put in some fresh oil with filter. Also new fuel/water filter. Before I did this I throttled it twice and it fired right up. I let it idle for good 25-30 mins. After changing the oil and filter's it would not start. I then toke off the fuel/water filter and had just small amount of fuel in it so filled it up with some fresh gas. And still will only run for brief few mins. What am I doing wrong? Or is there any thing else I need to do? Been on this since this morning and its getting frustrating

Check priming bulb and make sure there is no air in the lines.

Hey sutor623, It doesn't have a primer bulb. Whats the process in removing the air in lines?

Yup, sounds like the fuel pump is a bit tired and the fuel in the supply line drained back when you changed the fuel filter. So, lots of air got into the lines. You could keep cranking the engine, but it should not take all that long to get fuel flowing again.

To keep from cranking the starter a lot, just squirt some fuel into the throat of the carb and start it up. May take a couple of times, but as soon as the filter is full, it will keep running.

Primer bulbs are only used on outboards.

I toke the new fuel filter off, put the old one on and finally got it to run and stay running. When I dumped the new filter out this decent size black flakes came out. But she is running right so far now. The old filter seemed to do it

When you empty an old filter, the dirt in the filter gets on the clean side. You are now contaminating the carb, expect it to plug up next.

So now, when your carb plugs up, you will know why.

That's nice to know! I fought with getting it to start and to run for more then a mine for probably 3-4 hours with the new gas filter. I threw the old filter in and it fired up in no time. All the gunk came out of the new filter. I'm going to test the fuel pump and see what that shows.

Is there a rebuild kit for the fuel pump?

I have no idea, never looked. But i doubt the fuel pump will be the problem. Your problem will likely be in the carb.

I wonder if those black flakes are the fuel lines degrading from the ethanol in the gas??

I'm guessing it could be not sure though. This has def been a pain in the rear today.
