Hi guys so I was getting ready to finally finish winterizing my boat and I go to start it and I get a ?click? at the slave solenoid, weird cause like 2 weeks ago I had it running. In any case, I test the slave solinoid posts with a test light. So the one post with the red constant power works, the next post across it with the big yellow/red wire works while I have someone turning the key over, same as the little yellow/ red wire on the smaller post. So am I to assume that it?s not the solenoid ?
Next I tested the starter solenoid the big post with the red wires come off it have constant power the other posts do not show any power per the test light. So is it the starter solenoid ? Or maybe the starter ? I tried hitting the starter lightly with a hammer while cranking and still no go. What would be my next step to diagnosis the problem ?
Thanks Al
It?s a 1990 4.3 mercrusier btw

clean your battery connections and the cables at the starter/block

Jump across the large terminals on the slave (Red to Yellow/Red), the starter should engage and turn the motor over. If it does turn over you need a slave solenoid, if it does not, you might need a starter.

If jumping the slave does not turn over the motor, jump from the Yellow/Red wire on the starter, to the Large Red wire coming from the battery on the starter. If it cranks this way but not with the slave check the Yellow/Red wire on the starter which goes to the slave solenoid.

First remove and clean ALL of your connections ( including battery) then if it does not start, go ahead with the above troubleshooting procedures. It is possible that your light could show voltage, yet not enough current to activate the starter solenoid due to a poor connection. Once all of your connections are shiny and tight, finding the problem should be easy.

A screw drive will work, short 12 gauge wire, pair of pliers to grab both large terminals, its DC voltage, no change of doing that
