No tension on pull start cord

I was trying to start my 70' Evinrude 25hp tiller today and after a few pulls all tension in the cord was lost. It reals in and out, but freely and without effort.

What is broke NOW?

Probably #11 is not engaging properly. Either broken, or needs lubrication.

Not engaging by the sounds of it. Whip it apart and replace the broken bits.

After you get it fixed, don't just grab the handle and yank. Slowly extend the cord until it grabs and the engine goes up against compression. Then just a short tug is all that's necessary. You don't have to run to the next county with the cord. And to prevent breaking the rewind spring, don't let the cord snap back. Guide it back.

Re: No tension on pull start cord

Any tips on replacing it, or a part number?

Thanks
Dave

You can get the part number from http://shop2.evinrude.com

If that is what's wrong with it, take the recoil starter off of the motor, turn it upside down, and the plastic pawl is right there, held in place by 1 screw. Remember how the little springs go before you take the pawl off. Do not disassemble the recoil starter any further. You do not need to, as it seems like the main recoil spring is OK. It is coiled up in there and is pretty dangerous if you let it loose.

It is also available here at iboats

That is all good advice. Once you get it off and upside down the problem will be obvious. One thing I might mention is that the plastic pawl pivots on a pin. That pawl/pivot pin should be not be greased, but assembled dry. Sticky grease will keep it from working.

What all do I need to lube while i'm in there? I got the PAWL replaced, now when I pull the cord it seems choppy. Should I throw some grease on anything?

Maybe the PAWL has been worn since i've had it and have felt I normal pull..... im just not sure.
