i have had to rebuild my head due to a head gasket that had gone and while doing this i noticed that the thermostat was not present From the built up muck and salt it lokslike it hasnt been there for a while.

How will this affect my engine and would it be a god idea to put one back in?

Thanks

Running without will not decrease performance, although specially in cold water your engine will not warm up properly, it will make you use more fuel .
Replacing or in your case placing the thermostat is a good idea.

not "mission critical" -- but the guy who left it out, probably had a problem with the motor overheating and that was his solution...meaning, he never really diagnosed the problem. Related to your head gasket? maybe, maybe not...do you believe in "coincidence"?
