I recently changed my water pump on a 1971 evinrude 18hp model 18102s after the old one stopped pumping water and it still doesn't work, however after i decided to check the thermostat I noticed that it didn't have one, does this affect the motor in any way or can i run it without one?

Re: No thermostat

you need a tstat that is why they put one in it. the engine will never run right without it, yes it will run without it but not right.

Was there any blades broken off the pump when you pulled it?

Pull the head cover and back flush the water jacket from where the tstat is suppose to be and see if you are getting water out the pipe in the lower, you may have a peice of rubber stuck in there somewhere.

Also an outboard water pump doesn't actually "pump" water, it moves it and needs to be completely submerged to work, if you are on muffs turn the water all the way up and hold them on the engine tight till it pumps then it should keep pumping.

Re: No thermostat

Thanks mate, I did flush out the water jacket and it was coming out the the outlet pipe, however, i didn't put the hose up the pipe that connects to the water pump to see if the blockage was there which is what I will try next, but hopefully with a new Tstat it will work
