I bought a used 1972 Mercury 75 (7.5 hp) which had set for several years. It looks like new, but I never could get it to run out. Took it to a repair shop and they went all through the fuel system and charged me $$$! Still no top end. It starts on the first or second pull every time, but with 2 guys in my 12-ft. V-bottom, it barely moves along at full throttle. Someone told me it could be the stator. Anyone have any ideas. I know nothing about outboards.

Are you getting good RPM's?? If so it could be your prop hub has spun out if its a through prop exhaust. A 7.5 horse engine isn't going to have blazing speed but it should clip along enough to stir a breeze up.

Are you just expecting it get up on a plane and move out? Maybe it's all the motor can do.

I think I can, I think I can.

My buddy has a 7.5 hp 50-year-old Evinrude in original condition that will run circles around mine. We have used the Evinrude with 3 guys in a 14-ft. boat and it pushes it right along at a pretty good clip. Mine would not handle the load. In reverse, mine will rev wide open and barely move. The Evinrude would be throwing water over the transom.
