Hi guys, new boat owner here with a problem. The boat is a 03 Four Winns Horizon 210 with a 5.0 gxi and sx outdrive. The problem is that my trim motor will go up and down all day long in the driveway but once I get the boat in the water it blows the 15amp fuse at the trim motor. I've got Volvo Penta manuals on the way but would really like to find the problem and fix it now. I've took the cover off the shift lever and looked at the switch and wires, looked ok. Also looked at wiring around trim motor and looked fine there, too. My guess is something is getting wet and blowing the fuse? Is there anything on the outdrive to look for that may cause the fuse to blow? Any help appreciated.

Re: No trim in water- blowing fuse help

I would think the start-up current for a trim motor is a lot more than 15A.
Sure the fuse rating is correct.

The 15A fuse is for the control relays, not the motor. I would bet that you have wires in the throttle control that are shorting out and blowing the fuse. You probably don't run the trim on land while in gear and using the throttle.

I'm not sure but that's what was in the boat when I got it. It's the fuse mounted at the trim pump motor that keeps blowing. Someone told me it should be a 10amp fuse but a 15 is what was in there.

Hey Don, glad you chimed in here. I'm new to the site but not new to reading your posts. I thought of that and have had the shifter arm in different positions in the driveway while opperating the trim switch and cant get it to blow the fuse, it only happens in the water, religiously.

Pull the arm off and look at the wires.

The load on the trim motor has NOTHING to do with that fuse.

Hey Don, any trick to getting the outer cover off or just pry it off? The other day after removing the handle/switch cover I tried to get the arm off but didn't want to break the outer cover not knowing how it goes on.

Its usually a screw or bolt behind the throttle only release in the center of the control...you should not have to pry anything apart...

I had that screw out the other day and still could'nt get the cover off without starting to pry it off, then I stopped. I'll give it another look in the morning, maybe I missed something. Thanks

Look for a small set screw recessed on the side of the control.

Guess what, pulled the arm off and there was the shredded hot wire (red) wrapped around the arm. Just got it back together and can't wait to get her on the water. Thanks Don and Gary. This is a great website, I'm glad I found it!!!
