No valid HIN?

I recently acquired an old boat and trailer from a friend of mine. The boat hasn't seen water in a long time and hasn't been registered in years. The only paperwork i have for it is 2 new bills of sale (1 for boat, 1 for trailer)... and a bill of sale from a powersports dealership from 2004.

on the original bill of sale it states the boat is a 1978 Misc. All American. This will not fly with my state's registration process. It NEEDS to have a manufacturer. The only identification on the boat is a small badge on the dash that says "All American"...and of course the hull identification #. The numbers that are stamped into the hull are 51613-201744. Only 11 digits, not the 12 that are required for a HIN. I looked all over the place, there are no letters signifying a Manufacturer. I'm really not sure what to do in this situation. I assume the boat is a Larson, it has the same paint/stripe scheme as Larson runabouts from the 1970's, and i believe Larson did make an All American model in those years.

I'm getting around the fact that there is no identification on the trailer by having an id numer stamped into the trailer & registering it as homemade (was told to go this route by the DMV)

edit: the numbers are stamped into the top right side of transom

register the boat as homemade?

at the dmv they said they would be able to issue titles for boat and trailer as long as i get the trailer stamped and inspected and determine a manufacturer for the boat. i was just curious as to why the HIN would be incorrect.

12 digit hin number is only a requirement if it was made post law. if it really is as old as said, that law will not impact you and you should be able to register it with the 11 digit number, Larson as the manufacturer and you have the model.

Re: No valid HIN?

My '70 boat had no hull numbers. I registered it as a 1970 Sebring. I found the manufacturers code (SLC) though a google search on "boat manufacturer hull identification". Since it was pre law ('72?) it did not require a number. However, post law and 11 digits, and before '80, 11 digits should be ok (as is my Ghenoe). However, if the nobrainer at the DMV still gives you a hard time because they are too lazy to look up the law, add a zero at the end.
