Well, here is my problem that I encountered last night, and I "think" I may know the issue, but before I go to tackle it, Im hoping to get some advice on here first.

Yesterday, when I went to flush my motor out after using it, I put the muffs on, turned on the water, and started the engine.
soapy (salt away) water came out of the exhaust about for about 10 seconds, then nothing........just a little trickle of water.
I did notice that the temp started to get up there as well.

So, Im thinking that my impeller went out.
I also noticed that they anti freeze reservoir tank became full as well. it was way past the normal full line.

Do you think my rubber impeller just happened to go out on me last night, or do you also think that the thermostat went out as well, and didn't open up.
any relation to the impeller going out and thermostat not opening together?

Thanks for your help guys!

Boat is a 2001 Chris Craft with a 5.7L GXi-A closed looped cooled engine.

Water will still come out of the motor, thermostat open or closed. I mean where is it going unless the motor is filling up? Are you sure the muffs were supplying enough water and the pressure was high enough?

The muff water pressure will mask a bad impeller if they have a good seal on the lower unit. About the only thing that will stop the water flow is pieces of impeller blocking the water path.

You may have a leak in the cooler allowing sea water into the closed cooling system.

What are your ideas?

when coolant heats up, it expands about 6.5% by volume. Did the antifreeze level go back down when it cooled, or did it stay high. if it stayed high, you should get your HX pressure tested.

when on muffs, turn the water up all the way. use a 5/8" or larger hose. most of the water is probably going out the idle relief ports
