No water coming out? 1970 Mercury 500 50hp

Engine starts right up...i had the ears on it. and no water came out. i shut it off almost immediately. Thinking that the water pump was bad. Went and bought a whole new replacement. I get it apart and it looks like new. I know i should have prolly taken it apart b4 i bought the new one but i didnt. any may know why the water wouldnt be coming out if the water pump and impeller looked new?

This is my first time working on a boat motor. I have a 1973 steury sport fisher that i am revamping into a good boat. Its a project boat.

any advice would be appreciated.

It takes about a minute for water to start coming out. Sometimes at idle not too much comes out anyway. More you rev the engine more water comes out (to a point). But if you don't see water by about 60 sec turn the motor back off and check for clogs in the line. Check to make sure the muffs are covering the water intake completely and the water is turned up on the hose.

alright. well i investigated a little more. and found out that it was properly installed by previous owner. I have to clean outs some gunk and relay the gaskets and gonna install the new water pump.

This is gonna make me sound really dumb, but can anyone help me locate where the "pee" or "Tattle Tale" hole could be. Because at first i was thinking it was the two ports on the actual shaft casing. They are square or rectanular and on the very back of the casing. But after looking closer i found another one and i am thinking that is it. This one is a circle and is up further and off the the right side of the motor.

The circluar one on the top right is the pee hole that is where mine is at on my Merc.
