Hi folks,<br /><br />I have a 25Hp merc 1989 short shaft, 2 cyl. Sorry, no model number.<br /><br />I fired up the motor yesterday and absolutely no water was coming out of the hole. I did see some exhaust and could feel air blowing out of the hole.<br /><br />Is this an impeller type of problem or more likely something blocking the plumbing.<br /><br />And is there much more to a water pump than just changing the impeller?<br /><br />thanks<br />M.T. Are you sure the muffs were tight? If the muffs were tight and no water, you could have a clogged line or a shot impeller. May be time for a change. Fairly simple repair. Don't run the engine until you are sure.

You should be able to just change the impeller. I've done this a couple of times on my 140 and just did it on the 40 on the boat I got last week. Maybe a 30 minute job. The impeller is probably about the only thing in the cooling system that could fail on these things...

you may want to ck the water inlets on lower unit to make sure there not blocked maybe your imp' mercs are not vary hard to replace

I'm gonna do the impeller tonight anyway (big tourney tomorrow of course). Gonna try it without a manual - shame on me - but the dealer doesn't have on in stock. I'll check the plumbing while I'm in there for blockages.<br /><br />Anyone know if I need any special tools or instructions. And more importanly replacement parts such as seals or cotter pins? Is there a thermostat I need to replace?<br /><br />Hope I'm on the right track. <br /><br />thanks<br />M.T. Livewell

i think that you'll have to disconnect the shift-shaft in order to drop the LU. On my wife's '85 the connect is under the carb. A "C" clip on something that looks a bit like a chain "Master Link".<br /><br />TAKE CARE when removing LU bolts. Chances are that they are frozen. May want to apply some penetrating oil NOW and start to try to disassemble 2-nite.<br /><br />Good Luck<br />HAVE FUN!

If anyone looks back this far, I just wanted to say thanks.<br /><br />I wound up connecting a set up muffs (motor flusher) and cranked the water pressure up nice and high. Managed to get the impeller turning/clear the plumbing. I managed to run the boat all day on Saturday.<br /><br />Changed the impeller on Sunday. It was as easy as everyone said. The only tricky part was as I was disassembling it, a washer would fall from somewhere I would have to take a good guess at where to put it back. I'll pick up a manual when I can (next problem).<br /><br />Anyway, thanks to everyone. I appreciate the quick response and the very helpful folks on this site.<br /><br />M.T. Livewell
