Checked impellor and it is fine. Could it be Thermostats. Where are they located in 87 50 HP Evinrude VRO. Any other things to check. Losing valuable fishing time.

Did you try running a wire up the tell tale to see if it is blocked? Have you checked the head temps?

I pulled the line off from the telltale and put the air compressor to it. I could fell air coming out the lower unit. Haven't checked head temps.

Did you check the telltale outlet fitting itself? These themselves can get plugged which is why alden suggested running a wire up it.

Your drive shaft may be spinning inside the water pump impeler. Theirs uh little drive cam flat on one side round on the outside.

The sharp end is leading edge and rotates in clockwise direction with drive shaft. If this cam gets out of place the water pump quits turning.

Did this problem appear after you changed the waterpump impellor or just suddenly? I dont know much about your motor, but I suggest there is thermostat(s) and a poppet valve. Is it cooling in high rpm? Have you checked there is no weed etc in the water inlet holes? Those thermostats usually control waterflow in lower rpm to keep engine warmer to produce less smoke, but if there is a poppet valve also it should open when water pressure increases (revving the engine)and let more water trough the motor.

Problem occurred before water pump impellor was replaced. Old impellor was looking back so I replaced it but still no water.
where is the poppet value located?

It may be the poppet valve (sorry I don´t exactly know where it is situated in your motor, but I think the manual knows...)It may also be that the pieces of your old impellor are now in your cooling system blocking the water passages. (check the poppet and thermostats first)I still think the problem is in the thermostats cause they are controlling the waterflow in low speeds, the poppet valve is all way closed normally when trolling at low speeds, but if you rev your engine and there is still no water coming out, the problem may be blocked waterpassages or broken thermostat(s) and a jammed poppet valve. Are you sure there is no exhaust gases or water vapour etc coming out of the "pee-hole", also blown head/exhaust cover gasket can cause this.

Is water coming out the exhaust ports? If so, your impeller is working. Not sure, but your thermostat housing should be above #1 cylinder on the head (top, back of powerhead). Should be four bolts holding it in. It's easy to remove and inspect.
