Mercruiser 260...alpha one outdrive..

This is a 1983 Kayot deck boat. It has a new engine two years ago..but only gets used once a year at our family reunion. (0nly been the water twice... 3 days each time) Besides a new engine ...it got new u-joints , a new impellor and anything else it needed. Dewinterizing it today...in a hurry to leaving town tomorrow AM to set up our reunion site...and no water flow thru the prop exhaust on muffs??? Killed engine and removed a drain plug on one of the exhaust manifolds...no water. Opened drain **** on side of block ...no water dripped out at all.
Could anything be stopped up ...bugs or?? Just can't believe the impellor is bad already.

I'm stumped..any tips on a quick way to diagnose without a teardown..suggestions on anything, time is my problem.

Thanks...Stan

I was under the impression that the manifolds and block would get water even with the stat stuck...and that the t-stat would open when it reached operating temp and let the warm water out.

No...?

The older Alpha waterpumps are pretty easy to destroy and water ALLWAYS runs full flow through the exaust manifolds

An important item to check is the main water supply hose from the outdrive, underneath to the outdrive transom plate, then thru it, inside the hull along the bottom of the motor, into the seawater pump on the motor, make sure it's not cracked, kinked, or stopped up somewhere. You can temporarly remove the hose at the water pump to check for flow from the garden hose there. Also, there should be a power steering cooler in this line somewhere too, that you can check the condition of here as well.

I vote for the impeller. it should be replaced every 1-2 years anyways.

I can't get the forum to work...posted what the problem was...guess it got lost. There was an obstruction between the impeller and the thermostat housing. I back flushed and that cured the problem....although I was in the boat and have no clue what the blockage was. (....and AFTER I replaced the impeller of course..Ha!)

Thanks everyone...best regards..Stan M.
