I seem to remember hearing that if an impeller is put in with the blades curved the wrong direction it won't work. Could be that simple. I've always made sure I put a new one in the way the old one came out so I've never seen what happens if it's backwards. That or the guy didn't get the water tube reconnected right.

When serviceing a water pump, if the pump housing, and impellor plate are badley scored, a new impellor is not going to do the job. Replace the whole assembly.

The impeller is probable trashed if he ran it without water. I would change the water pump if it were me.

Good luck

Be sure the little woodrift key is in place .It's hidden in a slot inside impeller and a flat spot on drive shaft. The last guy may have used steel and it rusted away .I know it's against the law but cut a very small 1/2 moon off of a knickel for a key.

My friend's '69 Johnson 6hp seems to have the same problem, (new impeller, no water comes out). He feels it might be the thermostat stuck shut. Shouldn't some water come through even if the t-stat is stuck shut? Any thought here?
I personally suspect he left out the key or didn't connect the water tube when reassembling. Thanks.

If the unit was sufficiently submerged, then the new impeller should be alright. It is self-righting, so the direction of the vains upon installation is irrelevant.

Things to check...

- Water tube properly seated in the grommet in the top of the waterpump housing?

- Key for impeller is present and properly seated?

- Thermostat is present and working? Not ALL of the water travels through the thermostat circuit, so it shouldn't be the only cause of no water.

- Can you blow air up through the water tube (unit removed) and get air blowing back down from the powerhead and out through the relief hole? There are some small passages in that block that can easily be clogged by scale, salt, sand, etc.

- If you remove the thermostat cover and thermostat and start the motor, does any water come out of the cylinder head top?

- Scott

Thanks, I'll pass this along to my friend. Maybe I'll even give him a hand fixing it. :D

ok I dropped the skeg..and checked the impeller and housing while I was at it..seems fine..and added some water to the intake at the impeller and it drained downward to the intake on the skg..now it looked to me like theshaft has a small pinrod thu it that the impeller connets to..so that seems ok..now the water connection going to the motor seems fine..at least it seemed connected..when I opened it up at the skeg...the next thing is the engine I guess....I drained some water down the tube..nothing ever came out anywhere..but..I guess that leave the therostate right..now where is it at on these small motors..is that the silver round cap thingie on passiner side of the engine [standing from behind]...how do you remove and check it..one last thing guys..this little motor only pumps when in gear right..I wonder if the guy checked while having it in gear..huntertn1[james]

ok I have changed the therostat...and the impeller seems good and tight..the housing is smoth and everything..but I noticed one bolt doesn;t tighten and one is broken off in the skg..you know..the ones that hold the impellor housing down tight..think that might be it..will I hve to retap the one and drill the the other one out to make it fit tight enough to work..??????////darlie

Darlie,
Your motor's water pump (impeller) is turning when the motor is running, in gear or not. If the water pump only worked when in gear, it would overheat when it idled in neutral. When you had the thermostat out, that would have been a good time to force water up the water tube using a garden hose. If you can't get water that far, it's time to pull the head and have a look at the cooling passages for debris and blockages. You must find the reason for the 'no water circulation' problem before you run the motor for any length of time. Perhaps remnants of an old impeller have blocked the water flow in the powerhead.
