I believe my motor is a 1980 25 hp Mercury, tiller operated...

Put a water muff on today and started the motor up for the first time this spring. Even with the high pressure from the hose there was no water passing through the cooling system. Had no water coming out the outlet on the back of the motor housing. I would expect that if the water pump was worn out that the hose pressure would force at least some water through the system.. Am I looking at a plugged line or possible something came loose? I blew air into the water outlet and it would not hold pressure.. Air seemed to be passing somewhere. The motor started right up and runs like a top. Just no cooling water coming through. I have had the motor for the last 15 years and to my knowledge the water pump is still original. It was working last time I used it last fall.. I did notice a slight delay last fall in the water starting to spray out, but it was passing water.

Thanks in advance for any ideas..

Jim

without a doubt your motor is ready for a water pump. 23 years on a part that should be replaced at least every 2-3 seasons! I would think a water pump and thermostat will fix your problems.

I am going through the same thing on a 1980 johnson 15hp... It's only about 70-80 bucks of maintence if you let a shop do it...

I haven't gotten a service manual yet.. Plan on picking one up before tearing into this project.. Never even thought about a thermastat on one of these. Could be my whole problem. Where would it be located?

Thanks,

Jim
