No water from tell tail

I just bought a boat with a 1998 Mercury force 75 motor. I ran the motor for a minute or so in the water on the trailer, no problems, but I didn't check for a water stream. The high temp alarm had been disconnected. I checked the thermostat , and even ran with the thermostat housing off , no water. I replaced the impeller, still no water reaching the power head . I'm contemplating installing a pump rebuild kit.
I did reconnect the alarm and it sounded after about 90 seconds of runtime. Any ideas?

When installing the new impellar, did you Make sure the water tube was installed and aligned when you put the LU back on?

Pretty common for mud wasps to build nests clogging them up.

Also check to make sure the spring on the poppit valve isn’t broken. Had that happen on mine

I would always recommend using a new pump kit when buying a used motor, unless maybe you had a very recent receipt from a dealer showing it done on your motor. Are you saying with the thermostat housing off, no water was coming from the hole where the thermostat goes? If so then definitely put in new water pump kit.

I have a mercury optimax and after it had sat in storage with a shrink wrap on the boat and motor-----and was serviced with new water pump kit, and all the winterizing done----when I got to arizona and took it out--no water coming out of the "tell tail"----sure enough- the mud dauber bees had gotten inside there somehow. ON the newer mercurys its easy because they put a hose connection (garden hose) on the block to flush out the block. I did that and voila- works perfect. SO---anytime your motor sits- tape up the hole, put a golf tee in it- or put a bolt in the hole (that fits) and don't forget to remove it- but this will prevent the bee's from getting inside.

I am telling you this to tell you that it does happen and for some crazy reason- its very common---I dont know why they get in that little hole but they do. Good luck.
