no water from tell/tale

i just bought a 2001 150hp mercury, when i start it no water comes out of the pee hole. i never let it run long enough to get up to temp, cause i was scared tp ruin something more. But i did some reading on this forum first and i'm under the impression that it will not pee until the t-stats open it this true?

On some models yes, but it should have at least a very weak tell-tale.<br /><br />If you don't know the motors history it would be VERY wise to rebuild the waterpump, replace the thermostats, and change out the pressure relief assembly. These compromise the engine's cooling system.<br /><br />I also recommend getting a factory manual for your engine.

I have a '99 Merc that's 90HP and it starts a stream out of the pee hole even while turning the key over to crank it.
