No water from the tell tale?

I have a Yamaha 150 not sure of the year- mid 90's?

I put it on the water hose tonight and started it up, no water from the tell tale so I assume a bad impeller, well I took it apart and it looked fine.

So heres my question- do the thermostats have to open up to allow the tell tale to shoot water? Or is there an obstruction upstream of the pump?

If there is an obstruction can I just use compressed air to clean the water passage?

Or perhaps my water hose ear muffs are not enough for a V6 150 hourse engine?

Please advise! Thank you!

My f115 doesn't work on the muffs either. I need to submerge it up to the cavitation plate before the water will come out. I actually burnt the water pump when I first got it trying to get it to work with the muffs. I don't bother with them anymore.

Re: No water from the tell tale?

Same problem with my '97 Yamaha 50hp two stroke. No water from the tell tale. I replaced the impeller yesterday, got a strong jet on the muffs and at idle on the water. 5 minutes out the flow slowed to a dribble then stopped.

The engine is still cool to the touch , and lots of warm water is coming out the lower unit with the exhaust.

Think this is just a floating obstruction in the sytem? Is there a good way to clear that out?

Thanks

Well I replaced the water pump, while doing so I had the lower unit off, stuck the end of my pressure washer into the water pickup tube, water ran out of the exhaust but nothing from the tell tale. I put the pressure washer nozzel to the tell tale and blasted it for a good 25 seconds or so, then blasted up the water pickup tube again and all is well- tell tale is strong.

I assume there is debris in the tell tale water line caushing issues for us all. When I fired it up on muffs I had a very strong tell tale! Life is good!!

Re: No water from the tell tale?

Congrats! The water blast worked for me last week. Unfortunately it only lasted until I was out on the water!

However I was blasting from the bottom up with the lower unit off. I'll try from the tell tale down. Wish me luck!

Good luck!

I even get water from the tell tale as I crank the engine to start it now!

I took the heat exchanger apart; bug carcasses near the tell tale. I cleaned them out and everything works great.

Got the carbs tuned up by the local Yamaha dealer so I'm as good as new!....for now

Many times the problem can be with the tale tell having debris or dirtdobber nests in our area,. I always remove the hose from the block and make sure it is clear there first.
