No water just smoke

I was running my Yamaha 6hp. and I noticed smoke instead of a stream of water. I am guessing it ran for about five minutes or so like that.

Is the water pump shot or engine blown? Or both? What do I do next?

chances are at minimum the head gasket is cooked I would take head off and check cyl for scoring and that will tell you if you have a big problem. If by chance no scoring take head to machine shop and have them check it it is mor than likely warped. when you replace the water pump get the complete kit. push some air or water from top of wate intake down tube to clean any lunk out.
