1989 Force 85. Just recently bought this boat and wouldn't you know it, on the second day out, a large bunch of blackish looking stuff shot out the back where the wake was. About 1 minute latter a buzzer went off under the dash. Unfortunately, I was forced to drive it back to the landing which was at least 10 minutes away. I put the bottom in a drum of water today and started it up but no water came out of the holes. I also did not feel any sucktion on the vent type holes, by the prop. I assume that is the water pickup is. Does it sound like the engine needs a water pump? Can I change it myself? Did I ruin the engine driving it back to shore and how can I tell? It did start right up today with no problem. I did not run it more than 10 seconds today.
I apreciate any help and advice anyone can give.
Thanks, Ken

Hi Ken,

It is hard to tell from what you've said if your engine is damaged at all. It is a positive thing that you were able to start and run it today after your last incident. 10 seconds really isn't enought time to tell if it's pumping water or not though. Was your motor spitting water when the buzzer went off?

If the water pump hasn't been changed in the past couple of years, you are due for one. That does sound like your problem. As for your question about damage, I would check the compression. This will give you a quick assessment of the situation.

Changing the water pump isn't too hard at all, IF you have a manual.

Shane

Shane,

Thanks very much for the information. I am going to attempt tonight to remove the lower unit. The kids are driving me crazy wondering if we will be on the lake this weekend. I'll let you know how it goes.

Thanks
