I posted recently about the proper pre-lube for a new seawater pump impeller. The reason I was changing was I ran the boat on muffs a couple of days ago and I had no water out the exhaust. As the boat is a 2001 I figured it was definitely time for an impeller change and hoped that would take care of my problem. Well I pulled the pump today and the impeller is perfect. I don't winterize as I am in SoCal and run the boat every couple of months and we don't freeze. I haven't played with any of the petcocks or hoses. One possibly important note: when I first turned the hose on the muffs, water was coming out of the front of the nose cone. I figured that would stop when I started the engine, but it didn't. Also, when I pulled the pump there was water out of both hoses as if it had been pulling water, but apparently it was not going to the manifolds. Thoughts? BTW, this is my favorite thing about boats, they break on the trailer . . .

Can I assume you have used the muffs before and don't have a thru-hull pickup?

Safe assumption. Ran with muffs plenty of times and had good flow out the exhausts.

Might have a look at the hose between the drive bellhousing and the transom shield. If that hose gets kinked it can block off the flow of water.
I have also pulled out shells that get stuck in the tight bend of the tube that goes through the transom shield.

I just trimmed the unit all the way out and that hose looks good. I am going to back flush from the seawater pump inlet hose down through the hose you mentioned and out the drive. I am also going to back flush from the thermostat housing through the fuel and power steering coolers and to the pump outlet (both hoses are off the pump now). Becasue I had no water to either manifold I beleive that the individual hoses to the manifiolds are probably OK unless, in the unlikely event, both clogged simultaneously. I guess it is possible I have a blockage in the thermostat housing itself. I am confused that the pump had water on both sides still. Comments?

Did you replace the impeller, or just inspect it? If you just inspected it, did all the vanes straighten out after it set for 15 minutes? If not, that may be your problem, put in a new impeller.

the hoses are on the right sides? easy to swap them if you werent paying attention. follow the pickup hose and make sure it is on the pickup side.

OK. I have not changed the impeller yet, but will before I go back together. I am rotating the old one (still in the housing) and the vanes follow around nicely and make good sucking sounds. Hoses aren't on (neither is the pump), so they can't be reversed . . .

I just flushed all that I mentioned AND flushed back through the thermostat housing to both manifolds. All good. I think I am in the crappy position of putting it back together (new impeller and housing) and crossing my fingers.

Thanks for the help!!! Any last ideas? I really think I have eliminated everything at this point, at least as far as getting water out my exhaust is concerned . . .

Update! Update! Stupid me!!! I have now pulled the old impeller out of the housing and the far side (not visible when I first pulled off the housing) has chunks missing. Mistery solved (if there ever was one). Now I know my way around the water flow though . . . Sorry to waste anybody's time. Back to my first post. New impeller lube recommendations? I am going to use dish soap unless I hear otherwise. Thanks again.

So, how could the impeller be perfect condition at the beginning of this thread? If you didn't even look at it, you shouldn't have said it was Perfect.

Dish liquid is fine.

As I mentioned I looked at the impeller from the front of the housing after I pulled the pump apart. Every blade and the round ends were intact and visible, so I made a stupid assumption. Also, as I turned it before I pulled it apart it made nice sucking sounds. You're absolutely right, I shouldn't have said that it was perfect before inspecting the whole thing. Please trust that I usually don't make that type of mistake. I used to run a Caterpillar truck shop and understand troubleshooting procedures etc. I do outsmart myself sometimes though . . .
