I have a 1996 200 Mercury. The water pump was just replaced. I have since noticed very little water coming out of the tale tale. I have ran the motor for 1 hour at 4200rpm with no problem. While running it appeared that no water was coming at the tale tale. At idle it seems to pump more out the tale tale. Is this normal? Should I replace the pop it valve?

Re: no water pressure

It would be a good idea to find out what the block PSI is at idle, mid-range, and WOT. Any dealer could tell, for a small fee. That would be better than overheating the powerhead.

Re: no water pressure

I happened across another board that had an artice posted on a similar problem. I won't post it all here but if you would like to see all the comments, send me an e-mail. This is one reply:
It should pee a stronger stream as the RPM's increase. It might be possible that what you are seeing has something to do with the lower unit moving through the water, but it shouldn't work that way. The first thing I'd check is to see if the key that prevents the water pump impeller from spinning on the driveshaft is in place. My guess would be if that key was missing or something has gone wrong, it might spin at a low speed, but just slip at higher RPM's. (Similar to a spun hub on a prop)
Another suggestion was that maybe the engine is mounted too high on the transmon and rises above the pick up holes. FYI

That's what makes water pressure gauges so handy. It takes all this guess work out of the equation. I'm like gss036, I'd be suspecious of the impeller key.

c/6

Hooty
