no water suction

Hi everyone. I picked up a 84 larson delta conic with a volvo setup aq125 with the 280 outdrive. I have no suction trying to pull water from a pail. Need help with this. Impeller is there. And I n ok shape. Will be replacing it. Noticed the pump drips from behind hooked up hose to water inlet pipe on outdrive and only leak I can find is the pump

Use the muffs. The impeller can not draw water from a pail as the height is too great for the pump to prime. If you ran the motor trying to suck from a pail, you toasted the impeller. The only way it will draw from a pail, is if the pail is big enough to dunk the whole boat in to get the water level high enough to prime the pump. This is pretty much about the centerline of the motor crankshaft
