Hi all: I have an 86 in-line 6 90 HP Merc. I recently purchase this 86 Procraft. The motor sat up for 1 1/2, but prior to it's last use was tuned up at a dealership where all cylinders were hitting at 130+. I've had it on the water several times and the motor starts up like a new engine and idles smoothly, but will choke at WOT and due to no speedometer, but not go above 30 on Tac. I have replaced all plugs with NGK's and took out the autoblend and emptied tank so all fuel/oil is new and mixed 50-1. The prime bulb is new also. I have recently taken the carbs off and discovered that the floats are cracked and had fuel inside 2 of the them, making them heavier I guess. I cleaned them thoroughly and am about to put them back on. Will this fix my problem and give me max throttle or do I need to look elsewhere. I have searched this forum which is the reason I removed carbs. Good thing I did I guess. I just hope that will fix it. Any help would be appreciated.

Can't say if it'll solve your problem, but any fault you come across should be fixed. It may very well be the reason as proper fuel supply is a major parameter in any motor's performance.

Wrong fuel level in the bowls causes wrong amount of fuel in the carb & jets and most likely will flood the carbs. Depending on how much off the level is (how much too fast fuel is fed into the bowl), the motor could be able to take it at WOT. In your case - at the point you are - the only way to tell is to put it back together and check.

I agree with UU. Lets also hope you did not damage the engine by running it lean. :(

TMD

Thanks alot guys. I need to let you know that I also replaced the plastic fuel filter with one of glass ones from walmart and have run it once since I replaced it. It is dirty and has crudd in the bottom of the fuel filter. Is it ok if I replace the plastic fuel filter with it's original part number and put a second fuel filter on it to try and clean out more or am I looking at pulling the tank? Thanks again.

Thanks for the reply. I have cleaned carbs and replaced the flots and gaskets, blew air through all jets and put back together. Gonna take it out tomorrow to see if that helps it reach WOT. Oh, I also have Clymers manual, lots of info and help.

What did your plugs look like ? Were they similar or were the ones on the faulty carbies light coloured, burnt or have aluminium deposits ?

Re. fuel filter:

One filter should be able to keep it clean. If heavily contaminated you must find the source (replace the fuel?). The filter will become dirty faster, the more it cleans but running through two filters makes sence only if some dirt gets by the first one. Fitting two in parallel would make double the filtering capacity.

If fuel, tank and all hoses and fittings are OK there should be close to nothing to filter away.

If filter is way dirty it'll block or restrict flow.

Filters have specs (resistance, density, particle size etc.) but in general a 'fuel filter' will work great for filtering fuel.

When you did your carbs, did you make sure your floats were set right? If the floats you relaced were exactly the same, I wouldnt worry too much about resetting them. When I did mine, I had the same problem, they were a cork type and had a crack in it. That made them water logged, or you would say "fuel logged." I replaced them with these plastic ones and didnt think about resetting them. That just made matters worse until another mechanic told me to reset them. I was wondering what that little card with a bunch of numbers was that came with the pack.
Also, if your motor doesnt work right, rest your jet adjustment. If you wanna know how, let us know, we'll tell you a dummyproof method. :D hope it works for you, this weekends gonna be a good weekend to fish

I replace all anyway.

When you did your carbs, did you make sure your floats were set right? If the floats you relaced were exactly the same, I wouldnt worry too much about resetting them.
Answer: The original floats were plastic and tan in color. The ones I got for replacement were also plastic and black. I measured to the distance of the springs so that all were 3/32" like the manual said, but held them against the originals and there was no difference in distance from bottom to spring top. I was rained out yesterday and again today so won't know if it's better until this weekend. I really appreciate the help and will post reply after I run it on Saturday.

Ran the boat yesterday. No better than before, in fact it was worse. choked and wouldn't do any better than 3000 RPM. It tried to open up a couple of times, but didn't. I'm gonna take it and let a mechanic listen to it on the water this week to see if he can pin point the problem.
