No Yamaha telltale with muffs

I had my impeller replaced this spring but have yet to use the boat (wife's health issues and I love to kayak and surfcast.) anyway, its a 1999 Yamaha c-90 and if I place the outdrive into a garbage can filled with water, the telltale pees like a stallion. But I can not get it to pee with the muffs. I have the "Y" style that supposedly throws equal water to port and starboard on the O/D. House pressure used to allow muff flushing 2 years ago, but last year the telltale did not spit as well in our driveway but it did work. IMpeller was 3 years old so I figured with 100 hours or so, replace it. However, with muffs now, no telltale. In a full garbage can, good telltale. Why ?

it is evident you are not getting enough water with the hose,it could be the ears spring pressure which holds it in place has weakened. If it works submerged it is fine so the issue is relegated to the set up.

Re: No Yamaha telltale with muffs

could it be that I need to cover with duct tape a vent or something somewhere? there are vents directly above the vent and above the anticavitation plate but I do not know their function.

this still strikes me as odd since I used to easily run with a good telltale off the garden house before 2010.
(but the telltale is STRONG when the outdrive is submerged...)

Re: No Yamaha telltale with muffs

Spoke with the local yamaha dealer / repair shop after replacing my impella, he stated they will have the same issue at times and move to the garbage can method. I just changed my impella as I stated, had the same issue and used the can. Worked fine, spent 4 hrs pulling the grandkids around on a tube with no issues. Thursday I will go striper fishing and will have to retry the muffs.
The dealer did state he does not have luck with the 2 sided muffs, he sticks with the one sided style, he stated if water is pissing out around the muff on the opposite side he know he has enough water to run, if it is not then he works on the issue or goes to the can...

If it's working in the garbage can then that is a TRUE test of your water pump. The hose is forcing water through the system, not really allowingthe pump to do what it is designed to do. I use a big bucket on my 150 4 stroke and get a good stream.

looks and sounds like the neighbors are going to hope I just use my kayak,:) although the outboard is much quieter in a garbage can then when using the muffs. I just like to run the motor in freshwater IMMEDIATELY after getting the boat back on the trailer right at the boat ramp.:(

Is it possible to carry the garbage can with you and use it at the ramp? I am working on modifing a set of muffs for mine, very little space between two fins which causes the muffs to curl allowing water pour out.

Perhaps, but definitely not on weekends:eek:, as it takes too long to fill up. Am going to try tilting the motor all the way up and seeing if the muffs make the telltale spit then.

Re: No Yamaha telltale with muffs

Success ! Yesterday in the driveway I put on the two sided muffs and draped the garden hose OVER the transom and also raised the outdrive almost all the way up.
Telltale pissed almost immediately. I did "prime" the system somewhat with a little spray bottle by squirting water up the telltale, but I don't think that would have mattered. I suspect my local water supply has cut back on pressure. (we are in a drought in the Long Island, NY area.)
now if I could just get the steering to free up when the cable is all the way in to the tilt tube, lol. its always something.

Re: No Yamaha telltale with muffs

I burnt up both impellers on my twin f150s by using the Y muffs. The impeller housing got so hot they melted. Went to my dealer and told him what the problem was and what did he suggest. The shop uses a standard one sided flush attachment. He added that he will duct tape it in place while the mechanic works on the engine. Changed out the impellers and housings, started it up with the single sided muff and it worked just as he said it would. Thanks Bill Noel at Bills Marine in Portsmouth Va. He knows his stuff.
As to why both impellers went at the same time. Was not using the boat but once a month, so I decided that if i run it in the driveway, I will keep the ethanol from breaking down in the engine. I would hook up y muff and run at idle UNTIL the temp alarm would sound. Stupid stupid stupid. Then I would switch over to the other engine. Stupid stupid stupid.
