I have to travel 50 miles to take prop off and would appreciate anyone who could tell me what size socket it takes for the nut.Motor is a evinrude 40 hp #E40tecec. I have been told to use channel locks but that doesn't seem right.

Take 15/16 - 1 inch - 1and 1/16 - 1and 1/8 - 1and 1/4. one of those will fit. Furthermore, once you get the cotter pin out, you should be able to take the nut off by hand. It should not be torqued.

I'm surprised its as large as suggested but bow to superior knowledge.

Take the whole socket set with you, no point in driving 50 miles and finding you don't have the correct size.

I agree I would not use channel locks ( we call them waterpump pliers in the UK) but take them and an adjustable wrench anyway.

Dont forget the pliers to remove the pin!

I can understand why someone wouldn't want to use channel locks, like you said it doesnt seem right, but seriously pliers are just fine it shouldn't be that tight. Like the earlier poster I usually use my fingers on mine. Sometimes it takes a pair of channel locks to get it started but not because it is that tight.
