A friend of mine has a evinrude 50hp that started to nock last weekend. The first thing that came to mind is a rod?
It statred fairly quick and he shut the motor off and has not attempted to even restart the motor since thinking it might do more dammage. Is it possable that the rod cap has came loose and causing the noise or is it bearing related.
This motor is ran in a river in Arkansas (muddy water and plenty of things to hit) needless to say it is very used.

Has anyont seen an outboard with a rod nocking?
Any Help or Suggestions would be greatly appreaciated.

Tight Lines and Solid Hooksets :D

bkelly,

It certainly COULD be a rod, but I would be looking at a piston first.

The first step to finding out is to pull the head. A fairly easy job for anyone. Be sure to get a manual to put it back together when you find the problem.

Thanks guys,

We were going to pull the head this weekend. He does have a shop manual for the motor (the most important tool for outboards). He has a 40hp the same year, can some of its parts be used with the 50hp, I was just curious?

Tight Lines and Solid Hooksets :D

Re: Nocking Evinrude ?????

He started last night on the motor and he found a rod that had a lose cap.
We came to the decision that he needed to replace the bearing on that rod and replace the rod bolts on that rod cap.

I think the rod bolts might be streched due to high rpm. I think his prop is too small and the motor is reving to high. ( No Tach)

Should he replace the other rod bolts also or leave them alone.

Any other advice will be greatly appreciated.
