Noise after reving in neutral

After I rev my Mercruiser 165 IL6 in neutral it makes a noise, kind of a clacking noise. I just adjusted the lifters....3/4 turn after quiet while running. Is it possible they are too tight now? After I rev it in neutral to maybe 2000rpm's and bring it down to idle, it clacks for a few seconds and then quiets down again. Am I making something out of nothing?

Re: Noise after reving in neutral

As the lifters are what you worked on before it started, this is an obvious place to look. Even if it is possible to adjust the gaps by ear/feeling, a proper measure & adjust is better. Those parts are working pretty hard (heat, especially on exhaust valves) while under way so tolerances should be respected. Due to (normal) wear you may have a little noise from the valves even when adjusted to the specified gap. If you adjust the gaps until it's very silent you may have put them too tight.

Have you checked your exhaust flapper yet. They are generally metal coated with rubber, and after a few overheats the rubber gets burned off.The metal flapper hitting the side of the exhaust pipe will sound just like loose valves.
