When i plug the power of my smartphone into the 12v receptacle of my Pontoon boat, when the engine is running I get a high pitched sound. I also noticed that even when the engine is off I get "noise" through the speakers. If I pull the plug from the 12v receptacle no noise or high pitched sound. Could it be that the ground for the 12v receptacle is not good?

Possibly, What your hearing is more then likely the power supply in the plug of your smart phone cord freaking out because it doesn't like the voltage coming from the receptacle. Most vehicle Phone chargers have a small power supply in the plug to either clean up voltage or reduce it to 9v or whatever, I suppose it could be a bad ground or power that could cause it but I doubt it either way its worth looking into.

If the ground were no good it would not work, period. It takes a negative and a positive side of the circuit to complete the battery circuit so things work.
The noise when the engine is running could be alternator whine which is common. You can filter it out but it may not be worth the trouble.

Chances are the power supply inside the phone charger is a rather cheap rendition of a "switching style" power supply. They are noisy.

That whine is what we call "The Missles".
You usually hear it in stereos that are poorly wired.

Grounds Grounds Grounds Grounds Grounds.

You are experiencing a ground loop. As mentioned they make Ground loop isolators, but that's really just a bandaid. A better solution is to clean up all your grounds and make sure that they are of adequate size, solidly terminated and all of the audio equipment is grounded to the same location.

although you may have a poor ground in your 12 volt accessory causing the ground loop, The cause could be a dirty ground connection in your ignition sysyem. Some outboards are less ignition protected than todays electronic devices especially those with transmitters like smart phones. I have had phones transmit noise through radios even those switched off. Sometimes moving the device to annother area or adding a new outlet will solve thid dilema. Good luck

I believe what you are hearing is called (electrical noise) not the same as a sound wave.
take your device to your local Radio Shak or electronic store and ask them if they can set you up with a filter.

Go to a car audio store and ask for a filter to eliminate this.
Providing your electrical system is in good condition and wired properly.
