Noise while tilting and turning outdrive

I completed reassembly of my 1974 140 after transom repair and replacing shift cable, all bellows, water hose, gimbal bearing and shift shaft bushing. Initial operation on the muffs was good, including tilting and shifting into forward and reverse. Now, just before I was ready to put it into the water, I'm hearing clunking sounds when reaching the high or low range of the tilt and can duplicate the sound just a little when turning the outdrive. I initially thought I didn't get the water hose in correctly, as it seemed to loose where it comes through the transom, but it doesn't seem to be impacting tilting or turning.

The u-joints looked and felt ok and I greased them before re-assembly, but I am wondering if that is where the noise is coming from. I did engine alignment, although the last inch or so going in with the alignment bar had a little more resistance than the rest. When reinstalling the outdrive, I had to push harder with my feet and my back against the garage wall to get it to go the last couple of inches, but didn't have to force it on any more than that.

The only other potentially relevant piece of information is the existence of some gear lube in the u-joint bellows at disassembly. I figured I have seals to replace, but was going to make that a project for another day.

Is it possible the u-joints are binding or hitting something during tilt and/or turning?

It shouldn't take all the much force to push your drive back onto the engine coupler. Sounds like there may be a slight alignment issue. That can put the bearing/drive shaft in a bind and cause some weird noises... I'd check there first.

Pull the drive, re-align the motor , and only use 2 hands to install a drive.
What did you use to install the gimbal bearing and is it fully seated
Well, if you wait too long to replace that seal and/or the yoke it will cost you an upper unit

I will remove the drive and re-align. I was only going to test the rest of my repairs in the lake before addressing the seal. I agree it can't wait long. Thanks for the help.
