Please help,I keep hearing about the older 3.0 140 gm's make a lot of noise .it's an 1988.
can anyone tell me what kind of noise is normal for these older engines.
OH YEA,I ASKED THIS ABOUT @ MONTHS AGO AND NO ONE ANSWERED...Thanks joe
Depends on what kind of noise you are talking about,

Have you checked your oil for a start? Could be running low and the head just rattling.. when was it last serviced?
LET ME REFRAZE THE QUESTION, MY ENGINE IS SERVIVED MORE THE MOST ARE ( OIL PRESSURE IS 45-50 AT 3000 RPM,30 AT IDLE) NOT BAD HUH?
ANYWAY WHAT KIND OF NOISE IS NORMAL....LOL
last post must have been yelling over the engine noise. it really depends on what boat it is in and what moter mounts you have and the exhaust system and how well shielded the engine bay is. my 18' inboard jet with 4.3L and 4"dual thru transom and really hard mounts and major vent holes in engine bay requires muffs or ear plugs to operate. my buddies with 351 and everything opposite from mine is nice and quiet.
All noise is normal, unless you didn't hear it last time out.

In my experience of asking questions here, if you don't get a response, you did not provide enough info, or the answer is in your manual.

Best way not to get a response is TO TYPE IN ALL CAPS---these guys have enough people yelling at them every day.
Yipes! The dreaded new noise! jch, if you're not sure about what is normal noise and what isn't for your boat, have a mechanic take a quick listen to it. Hopefully all is well and you can just put some more insulation in your engine compartment to quiet it down. Some engine / compartment combinations are quite noisy. Happy boating
