Non-functioning autochoke

I have a 85hp 1985 force model A.

Engine turns over when I turn the key, but the choke doesn't engage when i push in the key. Any tips for testing/problem solving. If there is power going to the auto choke solenoid(?) & it's just toast, about how much does a replacement cost. I need a second set of hands, hence the reason I haven't wipped out the multimeter yet.. plus not really sure what i should be looking for.

Re: Non-functioning autochoke

You best bet is to get yourself a Digital Voltmeter (Walmart has them for 10 bucks) and with a friend begin testing your Choke Circuit. This is the easiest way to diagnose electrical problems on your boat.

As for your problem, it sounds like it could be one of several things. It could be your choke solenoid, could be your ignition switch, could be a short in the cable, etc. Your best bet is to start at the choke solenoid and test to see if its getting 12 V. If not, move to the next point on the circuit until you find 12V. At that point, you should be able to determine which part is defective.

To figure out prices, look here on iboats Mega Mall for parts or you can go www(dot)mercuiserparts(dot)com for specific engine parts.

An easy check of the solenoid to see if bad:
Remove the wire from it, take jumpercables and connect to an outside 12v source (lawnmower battery). Positive (+) to screw, neg(-)to ground. It should activate if its good. If it works, then you have other problems. Check the fuse block for blown/missing fuses and do as hgmatt says.

I think a solenoid runs around $30.00

Re: Non-functioning autochoke

price depends on actual model number, this is for a 1985 85 but not sure if your model is the same number

SOLENOID KIT
Product #: FK654924
Price: $48.25
Superceding Parts: F85924 SOLENOID
FK654924 SOLENOID KIT

Always use genuine Mercury/Mercruiser parts.

other numbers show a different part number at around 37 bucks.

I've got a '79 140hp, had the same problem when I got it. I ran a jumper wire from +12V to the solenoid itself to test it. Clicked the choke shut great. I just wired up a manual choke switch and mounted it next to the keyswitch.

Re: Non-functioning autochoke

thanks for all the advice, it turned out to be the keyed-switch. when i jumped it from behind, (red to green) it worked everytime, also sometimes the starter just startes to go when the ignition is on but i'm not turning the key.

time for a new ignition switch
