Does anyone have a ballpark hour/time frame figure on using a automotive water pump (circulation pump) on a GM 350 VP 280? Raw water cooled and used in saltwater. I took a new one, sprayed the back steel plate, and the steel impeller with Transducer paint, and figure pull it off at the end off the season and see what it looks like. Always experimenting, and willing to spend two dollars to save a buck! Thanks in advance!

It may last a season at best. The hour time does not matter. There will probably be more corrosion done while sitting taking electrolysis in to account. You may get more than that out of it if it is a trailered boat and you flush the motor after each use.Charlie

Rob, Marine water circulating pumps usually have some features like :ceramic or composite seals, stainless steel shaft, bronze impeller. You may get a couple seasons out of the auto type and one day you'll find the impeller is no longer there,Where will you be when you find out?

Yeah, I was thinking bearing and seals would be more of a unseen problem. Last owner put one on (auto) after a rust out on the back plate. And yer darn right it didn't happen in the driveway! Thanks for the info all! Think I will buy myself one for Christmas.
