I HATE DOING PLUMBING!
There....I feel better.
I just spent half the day fixing a half-working shower diverter, and it reminded me of how much I really dislike having to fix plumbing. Especially 50 year old crap.
One trip to the "real" hardware store, and two trips to Home Depot, and it's done. After 3 hours...

I do fully understand the "no politics" rule. I moderate a couple of boards/newsgroups, and it gets out of hand real quick, so I have the same rule. I gently remind the transgressors that the board is NOT a democracy, it is a benevolent dictatorship and enforce things appropriately.

I don't mind the electrical work so much, unless I have to get in the attic when it's 140 degrees up there.
What I can't stand about plumbing is how one thing turns into another thing turns into another thing....

Like changing a flapper valve in the toilet. You turn off the supply valve, and change the flapper. Then you turn the supply valve back on and.....drip, drip, drip. The Friggin supply valve now leaks!
Then you gotta turn off the main supply, go get a new valve (trip #2 to the store...) and then put it all back together.

Except the supply line to the toilet breaks when you're putting it back on (trip #3 to store)

2 hours later, and you've changed the flapper valve, which is a five minute job......

next time just back turn the valve handle a quarter turn. That should stop the drip. :D

I hear that. I can chase a drip all the way to the main-at the street. Grrrrrrr.

Or just drill a hole in the floor under the valve so the water has some place to drain to....

Number one rule to live by:

Never start a plumbing job when the hardware store is closed.

Rule two:

Never start an electrical job with the power still on.

Didn't you know that it's state law. Plumbing requires 3 trips to the hardware store!

Re: Non-political Plumbing Rant

For me, the hardware store is a ferry ride away. If I end up needing more parts, I phone the store and try to explain what I need (which can be very frustrating) then once I'm successful doing that I have to try to get someone on the other side to pick up the items and deliver them to the ferry so I can pick them up on this side.

If I have to go over to pick them up myself it burns up at least 2 hours, usually more.
