Non Serviceable Fuel Pump?

Looking in the online service manual it says my fuel pump is non-serviceable. However I ordered a kit and tried anyway. Worked fine, started three of the bolts bolts into the back plate (backwards) to hold my diaphram and gasket in line with the holes, held the small plunger back thru the hole with needle nose and pressed the back plate on straight. Then, while holding it all together tightly, I put the remaining screw in from the front plate and one by one swapped the three backwards ones around. Started her up, runs fine.

I noticed in the kit I got everything except the largr plunger cap, which I re-used.

Why does the manual call it non-serviceable? Will I run into a surprise out on the water?

Re: Non Serviceable Fuel Pump?

I just realized I accidentally posted in the Merc forum. Mine is a 1989 Evinrude 30. The manual is an official Johnson Evinrude manual thru 1989 which I downloaded from boatinfo.com

PS Thanks for moving my post to the J/E forum!

Interesting, I can't tell what the source is for that one. I know the ones they sell on ebay on CD are usually just pirated Clymer manuals which aren't that great. If you're going to be wrenching much on this motor, I'd highly recommend that OEM manual.

As long as you are sure of the year and module of the motor and use the appendics pages in the back of the manual for the info for your motor , you should be good to go. A OEM manual is best if you can find one and it is always easier to have it laying right next to you on the bench when working on the motors. Saves alot of running back and forth when you need to check on things in question, when they arrise. JMO

Re: Non Serviceable Fuel Pump?

Back in the 1960's OMC stopped selling individual fuel pump parts because the labor charge for a shop to rebuild one was more than the whole pump cost (at that time). I was there when it happened. Only in comparitivly recent years have they started selling parts and kits to repair them.
