Noob to boats.... what am I getting into?

So I'm on the verge of pulling the trigger on buying a fixer upper. I'm mechanically oriented so repairs are no issue. I've been woodworking for years so repairing decks is also no issue. I'm confident I can repair everything wrong with the boat should I chose to keep it.

But beyond that.... WHat the hell is this thing? *LOL* I'm looking around and I know its an 18ft Formula but other than that I know very little about it. It has a Mercruiser 165 on it.

I've looked it over and my reason for choosing this particular boat is the price. That would also be the same reason for not keeping the same boat because I could turn a small profit (I think) on it. Any help identifying it would be great as well as any help with what I'm getting into..... Thanks!

Mmmm, the trailer looks ok. Just be careful about assuming what your costs will be. Actually, the hull likes like it should clean up nicely. Just check out the transom, etc. Woodworking experience or no, I wouldn't want to replace stringers and a transom on a fiberglass boat. Of course that could be what I own a tinny.

Rule of thumb for this type of projects is to remember the acronym boat.

I appreciate the input guys! I'm ready to spend a decent amount to make it something to keep. If it turns out to be too much of a project then I'm not worried about it because I'm sure I can resell the trailer for the amount I have into the whole thing.

I'm still stumped as to what I've got. I posted it on Craigslist seeing if I could drum up any interest. At the price I have it listed for, I'll gladly give it up and start with something else

I'm still stumped as to what I've got.

Look on the starboard outboard corner of the tramson and you should see a stamped Hull Identification Number (HIN).
Post that number and one of our members will crack it for you. (the last two numbers are usually the manufacture year)

Unless you really want to replace transoms and do stringer or fiberglass work, paying anything for a boat in need of those kind of repairs is too much. I guess you could sell the trailer if its in good shape, but that's kind of a cumbersome way to make money!

If there is no wood rot and the engine turns over and runs, being a mechanic, you are off to the races. If the engine needs to be replaced and the stringers and transom are solid, that's not tough to do, but definitely put that in your budget. I would put it in the budget regardless unless you took it out for an extensive sea trial.

I like wrenching on stuff and troubleshooting and fixing issues, however if you spend all your time working on it and never actually get it in the water that's a bummer.

You'd be amazed what a money hole a boat restoration project can become. I've been there/done that twice. If that boat needs any kind of deck, stringer, or transom repair (and if it needs one it'll likely need all three) I'd be really really surprised if you're going to make money flipping it. It's not rocket science, but it's a lot of time consuming and at times very messy work.

However, if you just enjoy working on stuff, will want to keep the boat a long time, it's a boat you really like, and can take pride in knowing that it's fixed properly and will be in good shape for many more years, then yes, fixin' her up may be worthwhile.

On a positive note, it is an attractive boat and has a glavanized trailer. If you can get it for a steal/got it for a steal, and like to work on stuff, why not? I've bought things a lot worse.

Isn't Formula a good brand? I can't remember.

Just remember, restoration is a labor of love. If you don't have the love, and want something quick to get out on, don't get it. With the money and time you pour into it, you'd be better off getting something used that is in good running condition. If you have the time and can be patient to get onto the boat because you want to do things right, then by all means get it. Boats are a money pit not matter how you look at it. You don't get a boat new or otherwise to make money or expect to save money. If you budget for the boat, expect to go way above and beyond. Also, don't forget the cost of the missus if you have one. If she's not on the same page...well, you probably get the picture.

I've replaced the deck, transom and stringers on 2 boats now. You can do it in about a week if you have a buddy to help out. It's not too bad of a job. I don't see why people are saying it's time consuming to do. On my current boat(16' ski boat) I did them all in 2 10 hour days.

Thanks for the fantastic input guys. I really do appreciate it. At this point in time the wife has discouraged me from taking on yet another project. I did in fact get it for a steal. I won't put a dollar amount out there, but I pay more for my car note than I gave for this thing. I'm confident I can get my investment out of the trailer, should I have to junk the project.

That said.... I put it on craigslist and had FANTASTIC response. I have people coming to look at it today with cash and trade offers. I believe that it will end up being traded for a 1985 Honda V65 Sabre 1100 motorcycle.

The work needed looks to be minor. The rot is only superficial after taking a second look. The engine spins freely by wrench. A battery and some wiring are going to be needed. The key issue may pose a problem. It needs all new coverings on the interior and I believe that will be the most costly repair.

If someone can dicipher the HIN, here it is: TNRM2485M79B I think that means its a 79? My research has told me it is a Formula Thunderbird, but other than that I don't know anything. Again, thanks for the help folks!
