Hey guys, I'm a first time boat owner with a 12' Grumman jon boat that has a 1958 (model 5516) Fisherman 5.5 on it.

A few days ago I started the motor with it in a 5 gallon bucket of water. No water came out of the port on the back so I figured my impeller is bad, which it likely is now even if it wasn't at first. After doing some reading I realized that the motor may not have been deep enough in water.

The following questions are in reference to the pics:

The red line is the water level that I started the motor in. Was it deep enough in the water? Is the pump/impeller located in the swelled area just above the red line? Does the pump need to be submerged in water to work properly?

The red circle is around the fuel lines. The tank that came with the boat has only 1 fuel line which goes to the carb. The hose on the right of the pic is connected to nothing, it just hangs there. I suppose I need to put a vacuum cap in the plate behind the carb? Then does the hose on the right provide vacuum to the fuel pump that I need to use?

Well I can't figure out how to upload pics. I don't know how to resize them with a chromebook and I can't link to them where I have them uploaded on another site

Your link gives a 403 forbidden code.

Water needs to be well over where the pump is mounted. Look at the back of the leg and you'll see an oval opening part way up. Water should be between there and the lower motor mount. The pump is mounted where the leg flares out as you look down from that point.

Just an FYI, I use picresize.com to make my pictures 50% smaller so I can post them on the forum. Takes a few extra steps but it's free . Good luck with your boat! (and I'm a newbie too more or less...but yes always sink the motor leg deep in the water barrel. I use a huge trash can and fill 'er up.)

Does anybody know if I'm on the right path with the single line gas tank conversion? Mainly I'm wondering if the hose on the right needs connected to the vacuum port on the new fuel pump?

The air hose is not used if you are using a pump conversion. BUT the pump pulse port does need to be connected to a pressure/vacuum pulse source in the crankcase.
