I have a 1987 OMC Sea Drive o/b 225hp on my boat. Am trying to sell so anticipating questions such as "is it fuel-injected?". I don't think it is but not really sure. Also pretty sure this is a 6 cylinder motor...Can anyone help with some technical info. that I can spout out when trying to sell? Motor works fine & i've had it for a year but i'm ready to move on.

Do you have an owner's manual (not a shop manual - just the simple owner's manual)? If not, that is something you might do in the mean time - get one. It would not only givey you info like this, but the person you sell to would probably apprciate it. I know I would. If your local dealer can't get you one, I got mine from www.maxrules.com. I could guess at answers to your questions, but don't know that particular engine. If you remove the cowling you should be able to see how many spark plugs it has and whether or not it has carburetors.

My '82 235 is 6 cylinder carbureted, for what it's worth.

Hi Surftrish,

It would sure be good to get your facts straight before buyers turn up.

If I went to see a used motor, and the guy had a service record from the local wrench, I might forgive his ignorance!

But if not, and he didn't know how many cylinders it had, or whether or not it had carburetors, I would walk away, because it would suggest to me he hadn't serviced his motor, or taken basic care of it.

I do have the manual (OMC) for it but it is simply full of info. on installing the motor and the tilt/trim, fuel lines, etc. I am fairly certain it has 6 cyl., and I think i'm correct in assuming that they didn't have much in fuel injection back then. You're right, I don't want to sound like an idiot...that's why i'm asking now.

I have a 1987 2.7 liter (225). It is a carburated 6 cyl. It has power steering, electric primer pump (no bulb), and is oil injected (no mixing). I would think yours is the same. Just curious, how much are you gonna ask for it?

It is very simple to tell whether a motor is a 2, 4, 6, or 16 cylinder. Count the spark plugs. One for each cylinder. Fuel injection or carbed is also simple. Look at the front of the engine. If it has carburetors they are staring at you. Besides, in 1987 OMC made no fuel injected engines. They did however make OIL injected engines. Two different features.

If anybody can figure out how to make 225hp from anything less than a 6, you would be rich. It's a pretty safe bet that it's a carbed 6.
