not a spun hub, but similar

three weeks ago or so I took my 1963 Lark V 40 hp electric shift out for a spin. I got about 10 miles down river and reached the Mississippi and turned around to head back. Cruising along real good and the motor revs up with the boat slowing down. So I think spun hub and as long as I kept it down at just above an idle I was fine so I limped it home several miles that way. At one point started to run out of gas and switched tanks. After switching tanks gave it a bit more throttle and it came on plane and held it there. Today I put a new prop on. It is like it is slipping. I tried a third prop and same thing. It does not have a hole shot, but will come on plane if you give it time and stay on a plane. It just seems like it has no power. The motor still seems like it is shifting fine and no jumping out of gear like a clutch dog, but I have never got into one of the electric shifts. I am going to go through it this winter and wondered what to look for. I won't need it anymore this year as I have others to play with.

If you find the problem does not lie in the lu, such as the springs, I would guess that the 'revving' that you are hearing is not the prop at all, rather the carb running lean, for whatever reason (air leak, faulty connection, etc...) If this is so, I would look into this further before running again as sometimes that 'revving' is followed by something disasterous.

if it were revving from the carb running lean it would accelerate when it revved would it not. This slows down like a spun hub.

If it's not a spun hub, then I would suspect the springs on the electric shift mechanism are shot. Are you running the Type C oil in it?
I had an electric shift 40 for many years, and once it went downhill, I could never get it reliable enough to be a daily runner in salt water.
Most of the motor still lives on in my current Frankenstein (manual shift!) JohnnyRude, but the electric shift is long gone......

this is an older electric shift not the hydro electric shift so to my knowledge does not take type C but standard lube. It may be the springs. I will take a look at it this winter. If nothing else I can part it out. It's got a good generator on it with belt. Those are getting hard to come by.

The old electric solenoid/spring ones take type C also.

If it is the forward hub, and spring slipping, you will need them both.

I've seen this happen before, if the little tab breaks off the spring, it will lock the gear, but will slip under load. The spring is still available 0311030 according to the parts book, but it is extremely expensive $348.02. The forward and reverse springs are the same part #. If hard pulling in reverse is not a concern, I'd just swap the springs, install a new w/p impeller and put it back together. Also check the wiring, if the insulation on the wire to the gearcase is deteriorated, there is a possibility that they shorted together, and fwd, and rev coils were both energized at the same time this would break a spring.

Hope this helps, Jimmy
