1 have a 23 ft sea craft cuddy with a 225 omc sea drive - new short block 3 yr ago, has always ran well. 2 trips ago when i first left the dock i could only get 3000 rpm, no missing or sputtering, ideled well. after 3-5 minutes i got the normal rpms and never had a problem the rest of the day. i should say it was 40degrees. went out again same thing.
i checked the compression and it is the same in all cylenders. i changed the plugs and checked the water seperator. i put a new power pack in and tryed it. same thing. i beleive i have a electrical problem. trigger?

madmax

Re: not enough rpms

Next time you take it out, Hold the choke in to see if rpm's go up to 5000 +

I also wanted to ask you why a new pack was put in? What side? Were you not getting spark on 3 cylinders?

i replaced the pack (1) only has one power pack. i checked the coil wires with a timing light on the wires seemed to have some missing. i add yamaha decarb each time i put gas in. the choke is electric. could this be carbon build up?
madmax

If you think the engine might be carboned up, do a compression check. One thing that happens when pistons get loaded up with carbon, is the rings stick, lowering the compression.
Lettus know.

c/6

Hooty

Re: not enough rpms

Abucs6729.... Regardless of the problem, always follow a standard trouble shooting procedure to eliminate guess work.

Compression should be approximately 100+ psi and even on all cylinders... What was it? With the s/plugs removed, check the spark. It should jump a 7/16" gap on that engine with a strong blue flame on all cylinders. Did you get that response?

Spark plugs can tell a big story. When running as it (the engine) should, the s/plug electrodes should all look exactly the same. Do they?

There is a shift cutout (relief) switch located at the shift linkage on the lower starboard (right) side of the engine (Follow the shift cable to find it). The purpose of thisa switch is to momentarily interrupt the ignition on the starboard side in order to get the engine out of gear smoothly.

This switch has been known to malfunction at times, especially if the shift "L" lever that goes through the retaining holes has a build up of salt around the nylon bushings. This switch is easy to check out as follows.

There are two wires connected to that switch. Trace where those wires lead to. One will go to ground. The other will lead to a rubber connecter which leads to the powerpack. Disconnect that rubber plug. This effectively eliminates the cutout switch. If the problem is now non-existent, cleaning the salt out (if salt exists) of the nylon bushings may cure your problem. You may need to replace the switch... that remains to be seen.

When you encounter the problem, and the engine later on pulls itself together and runs fine... does that increase in power to normal come in slowly and gradually, or is it a very sudden and quick increase in power, such as turning on a switch?

Let us know what you find.

Re: not enough rpms

thanks for your reply. i will check out the spark. the compression is 95 on my guage on all cylinders, this is what it has run in the past. the spark plugs looked the same before i changed them. i am familar with the cut out switch as i had to replace one in the past, i will check out this. the power returns gradually wihin 3- 4 minutes. after the power returns i do not have the problem return until i use the boat again on the next trip. i have only had it happen in the extreme cold. ????

Two stroke engines don't like to run cold. Are the thermostats working properly?
Just a thought.

c/6

Hooty

Re: not enough rpms

i should clarify, the power will return in 3-4 minutes when it returns it returns quickly. regarding the wires from the select shift , there are 3 wires- one to ground , one appears to go to the powwer pack, the other under the power pack?. do i disconect both wires? i would say power returns as if a switch connects.
madmax
