Yesterday I asked a ? regarding a 1989 Evinrude E40TLCEC. And it was to find out if that motor required a gasket on the air box. Motor diagrams indicate yes but my motor is used and does not have one. Anyway, I got many different answers yes and no. I'm just looking for the right answer. This was my dad's boat and as far as I know it has been this way for a long time since he would never have anything done to the motor as far as maintenance

Re: not feeling good about answers

A forum can give NUMEROUS answers
It's up to to decide what is THE RIGHT answer!

Guessing how it does or doesn't have one is a non issue.
They never put in at the factory?
A mechanic forgot to put back in?
A friend helped him and forgot it?
He meant to replace it?

Too many variables.

The manual says it needs one...it needs one....unless someone can PROVE they are an Evinrude ENGINEER or have a factory notice stating AND SCAN/SHOW so...it belongs there!!!

All else is subject to forum 'Specialist' take it with a BIG grain of salt!

Yes it needs it, will it affect performance by it missing... no. Your previous post was answered correctly as it missing will cause the excess fuel that drips into airbox to leak under cowling and run down midsection sometimes.

Just to add to what 1fish says, when you post a question on a public forum like this one, you're inviting anyone with an opinion to contribute. Everyone who replies is trying to help and should be respected for their effort and good intentions.

It's not mission critical, but without the gasket, the oil that collects on the inside of the airbox cover will leak into the water, instead of the crankcase. It's not a lot of oil, the motor probably doesn't need it for lubrication.

Don't pay shipping, or make a special trip to the dealer, just for one gasket, but next time you order parts, or go to the parts house, get one & put it on. We'll all feel better, and hey, isn't that what really counts?
