I have a 1989 OMC 2.3L I/O that is overheating. Its not picking up any water to cool the engine. I've replaced the water pump impeller (the old one did look worn). But there's still NO water coming to the engine. What else could it be?

Thanks

worn pump housing, lower plate of pump, missing or leaking grommets, water tube not installed in pump, plugged pipe or hoses. Missing key on impeller preventing rotation of impeller.

I have the same drivetrain in an 87 renken. What I found out was that my manifold and riser were both plugged up with rust, most particularly the riser. Also, the hose running from the intake manifold to the thermostat housing eas plugged at the thermostat housing end. BTW, I'm looking to buy both a manifold and riser, do you have a any sources for omc 2.3L engine parts? Thanks.
Jackie

Hi for your info
I have a 3 liter merc ---- but did a hose swap to clear braided 75 psi line for the intake , ie from lowerleg out to the thermostat.

I can see the water flow when under way and any junk that gets past the impeller, also added a 30 psi gauge to tell if the impellers workin (positive confirmation) and am thinkin about an in line debris filter from a garden hose to stop impeller shards from entering the engine and have the visual id right away.

its a great mod suggested by Bondo
oh my line was 3/4" inside diameter
thanks

do you keep your boat in the water. I had the same problem with my sea ray and I had to take it to have the out drive cleaned of barnacles. Maybe its as easy as cleaning the water intakes on the actual out drive. I burned up to water pumps before I took it out to be cleaned..

capt stabin
