I noticed that the tongue on my trailer is in need of some dire help. The pics should be pretty self exploratory.

What would be the best way to tackle this? My Brother in law is a welder, so having it welding right is not a concern. But how to go about doing it is.

Thanks

Looks like there is some pretty decent rust down the whole main beam of the trailer. Is this the condition of the entire trailer, or just up front. And I can see how you are a bit concerned how that V comes together. Is this trailer from a factory or has it been fabricated or altered?

Is that narrow scab supporting the butt welded tongue?
I wouldn't bother welding anything on that. I would go to the steel yard and buy a proper section and weld that to the trailer. I think replacing that piece would be cheaper and safer in the long run. I think I could replace that chunk just as quick as trying to fix what you have. A scab plate like that does not really give you any extra support.

in my very unprofessional opinion, you need a whole new tongue properly sized and welded to replace the improperly sized and improperly welded piece you have. If you have a family member who is a welder your looking at around $100 in parts and $30 in Beer.

Use an angle grinder to remove the old piece and prep the remaining, the rest is up to your welder, he is looking at about 30 minutes of welding time total.

If you are interested I would look at getting some 3/16" thick 6"X12" flat stock to make some good gussets with, probably add 10% to the total strength and clean up the joints where the trailer mains meet the tongue. Grind it clean and paint, twice.

I noticed that you have a single axle. There isn't much weight there. What i would do is #1 grind the tounge to bare metal. #2 grind the weld in pic #3 flat and weld a flat plate over the surface. Primer and paint. I don't think it is as bad as it looks. I don't like that weld repair in pic #3. On the bottom of the channels secure a flat plate to tie the sides together.
