I was comming back from Lake Berryessa yesterday afternoon and had just passed the ramp at Lake Hennesy. We all know to be careful of people pulling out of the parking lot because it's on kind of a blind turn.
In front of me was a silver Mercedes and the driver eased over into the turnout just past the parking lot and then without so much as a brake light he turns left and comes back on the road directly in front of me. I slammed the brakes on and the anti-lock kicked in and finally full lockup and I slid to within a couple of inches of the drivers door.
Unbelievably, the guy eases past me and continues to turn left into the opposite lane and heads down the road. I pull over to the turnout and get out, shake like hell for a few minutes then take a walk around the truck. I grabbed a Gator Aid out of the cooler and slammed that down. The motor cyclist that was immediately behind me was sitting on his bike shaking as well as the guy in the pickup that was behind him. We all figured the guy was going to turn around and see if everything was o.k. but ...noooo.
After we decided he wasn't comming back we all left but about 10mins down the road I stopped and decided to call CHP and let them know what had happened. I had his licenses plate number burned in my memory and had recited it for the last couple of miles.
Well low and behold here he comes down the road, I can't believe it, he blows right past me again. So I fire up the rig and follow him but I kept well behind him just in case he did something stupid again. We finally met up at a stop sign and as I pull alongside on the inside his wife rolls the window down and say's she's sorry. I said sorry, you owe me! Now the driver joins in and said Owe you, I don't owe you anything. I then told him, would he refuse to pay a heart surgeon for saving his life and he said of course not. I said, buddy, my fast reaction time, over sized tires and beefed up brake system just stopped a 8,000 lb vehicle from killing you, yeah, you owe me. To that he say's f-you.. so I told his wife to roll the window up. I eased a little further over to the side, caught a nice patch of gravel and stuff the pedal to the metal. 35" ProComp M/T's pickup and throw gravel reall bad. It's a shame his car was in the way.
I fully expected a phone call from an insurance company today but there was none. It could still come but I have insurance to cover it. Even if it doesn't cover it, I'll just pay for it, it was worth every penny.
The funny part is that I wasn't mad until he cursed me but on top of everything else I'd have to say, I did have a touch of road rage.
