Pulled the uj bellows today, all looked well. Doesn't explain how it was full of water? I was thinking possibly the gasket for the outdrive or the rubber seal that goes around the water intake, maybe it didn't seat right when we installed the drive last week and leaked water under pressure from the impeller? Am I overthinking? New gasket was used and new seal but no sealer...

Re: Not the bellows leaking, so?????

I'm anxious to hear any ideas on this question because I had the same problem last year . Pulled drive bellows full of water gimbal and joints rusted. And a small drip inside the boat. No tear or hole in bellows and I have a king cobra so there is no gasket between the drive and pivot housing So I made my own out of permatex just to try and eliminate the possibility of it coming in between the drive and housing just to eliminate that possibility . Water passage seal was very dry rough looking so I coated around it with heavy water resistant grease to try and make a better seal thinking what you said about pressurized water filling the bellows. Have not put boat in yet to see if I fixed it. Time will tell

I took a wire brush drill bit to the housing where the gasket goes this time. Bastard better not leak this time lol

Like I said in your other thread, that gasket does absolutely nothing keeping the water out of your bellows.

Gasket around the water intake also has no connection.

Put some grease on the nose cone of the drive where it pushes against the bellows. That is what is making the seal. Not all the other stuff you are worried about.
Step 16 in the following instruction in the manual.

You have the OMC manual?

So, did you buy an OEM bellows?

Yes, OEM Bellows and the local West Marine store GAVE me an omc manual lol. Also, Bruce the lip of the bellows was gnarled up some from previous installs.

Make sure you smear some grease on the bearing carrier and/or the lip of the new bellows.

They actually gave you an OEM manual? Not a Clymer or Seloc right?

It's a Seloc. I went in to get another gasket and was looking through the manual for a second and he was like "man you spend enough money in here, just take it" lol can't argue with that!

You really want the OEM manual. Seloc has a lot of incorrect info in it.

Is there corrosion on the neck of the gimble housing that the bellows fits on? Did you use OMC gasket sealer on that neck, the OE manual tells you to do so. The OE bellows has a ridge on the sealing surface that is supposed to fit in a groove on that neck.
The bellows could have been leaking from the other end as noted where you are supposed to put OMC triple guard grease on the inner seat of the bellows and the nose of the bearing carrier. The only other place I can think of is the grease tube for the gimble bearing.

Everything is all put back together and sealed up with dealer, should be able to make a run tomorrow. Any way of checking for water in there without yanking the outdrive?
