hello, all

I have 1964 Evinrude 28hp, 2 cylander with almost 14' fibeglass panyan.

after did all work to it. it runs ok. with 2 adults 135pounds each. the boat does not go on plane. Everytime at first start, there is a few poping sound like backfire, also checked spark plugs after running. They are wet and black.

what would be the causes?. It goes about 10mph with 2 adouts.
Does that seem to be right?

I still dout it, it still not running the it should be. advices will be appreciated

Re: Not up on plane?

Sounds like it might be running on 1 cylinder? It should go much faster than that. My 18hp will go around 20 mph with 2 adults in a light 14' aluminum. Verify strong spark on each plug wire by using a spark tester. Also check the compression just to be sure and eliminate that.

What work did you do to it?

I did put in new tune up kit set points, rebuild carb kit, lower unit with new impeller and oil adjusted lync and sync and replaced shift cable, new fuel pump and spark plugs.

Thank you for reply.

How were the coils? Did you verify strong spark after the work under the flywheel?

the coils are in a good condition. Checked spark with auto zone spark gap terster. The spark jumps on both pulg's boot. compression 104, 105. did it before winter.

Can a motor run with one cylander and idle ok like that?

I also verified spark by pulling one out and start the motort. It runs on both plug by diconnected oneat the time. So i do not suspect the motor running on 1cylander though. Thank you. what would be next to check ?

Backfire suggests timing is whacked. Have you had the flywheel off lately? Possible sheared flywheel key (usually caused by not correctly torquing the flywheel nut); you get a few chances to do it right before destroying the flywheel and crankshaft.

be sure the flywheel is torqued correctly. did you adjust the needle valves. I believe you should have both high and low speed. on the top secret file, there are instructions on how to do this if you haven't already.

Well you did the cylinder balance test ok, so it must be fuel related. jsdsgrog had a good point, have you tried the high speed adjustment needle valve? You should have one on a '62.

Yes, I did adjust needlevalve, set s/s 1 and 1/2 and H/s 1 turn backing off from seating and fine adjust them after that.
For flywheel torque, I torque it to 105 foot pound. Last friday I took off flywheel, I saw the edge of key a little damaged, I think I misaligned from first time I put it back in.

How do I replace it? It seem to be tight in there. Thank you all.
