Notice need help as to what i can replace with

I have a 94 278 Four Winns that where running 2 v8 omc cobra 1.66 outdrives (very hard to find clean 94 to 98 parts I'm told that will work with what i have) That was let sit in saltwater for 4 years and the gimble housing and both omc sx outdrives has so much corrosion that i don't want to spend any money on repairing them, But would like to replace all of the outer parts of the 2 drives. the engines are a closed cooling and run great the boat itself is clean and in very good cond, I have been told that all volvo or OMC SX outdrives and gimble are the same after 94. can anyone help me as what to look for that will replace the gimble that will bolt up without have to do and mods how late in years will work and the right outdrives that will still bold up and run with out anything other and just swapping all the above out to a the same or how much newer i can go without having to do any modifications to the transom opening , I found 2 complet 04 volvo sx complete gimbles setups like new off a 2004 volvo sx but how far back can i go to look for 2 nice outdrives that will bolt up and go without alot of modifications, After 2 years of saving and buying this and that trying to make this and that work not much luck, as you can tell at 68 all this is new to me but only one of a very few things i never been into, But didn't take me long to find out living on a fixed income I may be in over my head, But if i can just get it in the water and enjoy it a while of what few years i have here I'll be happy

Being a 94, you could have either type Cobra, which do you have?

the 2 in the photos the bottom by Don S one was use up to 86 to 93 that when they change them in 94 the upper one took the place of what i have mixed with OMC and Volvos till 2000 from what i have been about to learn online

You keep saying "I was told" or "I read" "they say". If you are reading wrong information, or "They" don't know what they are talking about then it just doesn't help a bit, does it ?

Why don't you just post a picture of your drive, or even a picture of the transom shield and bellhousing with the drive off will tell.
Your 3868076 number does not convert to a Volvo SX drive, but it does convert to a "Cobra" in the Seloc manual, but it doesn't say what cobra it is. But, when the Seloc numbers go to Volvo conversion, they are called SP and DP drives, not Cobra and King Cobra.

This is what I mean about just reading info. on internet sites.
Yes, Volvo and OMC went into a joint venture in 94, but OMC also used the Cobra and King Cobra drives in 94 and 95. Nothing in 2000, because OMC went out of business in 98.

Your text is about as confusing as it gets. That picture with the above text next to it, is not of a drive that is on a boat.

BUT, if that is what your drives look like, then yes, it is an SX style drive, I'm also going to move this over to the OMC forum, it's not a Volvo.

Sorry told you I knew very little, only what i learn but then again your not 100% right based on OMC and Volvo ref manuals if you read them, but then again no one knows everything their is about this stuff or anything eles,I'll be the first to say at 68 I know alot about alot of things but not all about anything. But you find alot of them on here that thinks they know it all. when fact is even myself learning what i have know when they are wrong about some things they say, But I do know when someone don't know what they are taking about ,if you go back and read my first posting I stated that I had 2 94 OMC SX Cobra Outdrives and had the chance to get 2 like new 2004 volvo sx gimble's setup and wated to know what years drives would bolt up to them , but see i can find out on my on, and not have to be put down for knowing i don't know as much about all this stuff as i would like But give Me a few months "like this I learn very fast",And that I already know as much if not more than anyone here" But God Bless and Thanks For Nothing http://www.glmmarine.com/pdf/OMC_Catalog.pdf

GLM is a cheap aftermarket parts importer from China. Wonderful resourse for information.
What you seem to not understand is that just because you have a 94 boat, doesn't mean it has a 94 engine and drive in it. But it doesn't matter now, You seem to have everything under control and know what you are doing. Not sure why you posted a question with all your knowledge, but oh well.

PS, I am a Volvo Penta certified tech and have been a marine tech for many a year. I was also using Volvo Penta OEM information.

Good luck, it's great to have someone so knowledgeable about Volvo posting here.

Flash there are tons of your-era drives out there. Instead of trying to modify/adapt, I'd just replace with same. There's always several on E-Bay for instance. Your going to , IMO, get into a big-ole belly-ache trying to go with newer-drives, shift-cables, ratios, ect. besides yours look like they just need some heavy recon, unless your gimbal housings are shot, but even then, you can find some good freshwater replacements.

Okay?? You are taking info from GLM and and disagreeing with in my opinion the best volvo penta man on the forum?? I guess wisdom doesn't come with age in your case..

Your first picture is crap.. Not a soul can look at that and tell you for sure anything other than it is corroded.. Your second picture is a sx... I hope your boat is worth all the trouble and money.. You are fixing to dump some cash...
